Small action model (SAM)
A small action model (SAM) is an action model compact enough to run on a phone, PC or other edge device, much smaller than the large models that run in data centers. AGI, Inc. builds AGI-ACT, a family of small action models from 2B to 20B+ parameters.
Not to be confused with a small language model, which returns text instead of actions.

Why make an action model small?
A small model fits in a phone's memory and runs on its chip. For the tasks it handles there, personal screen content stays on the device and the agent responds without a round trip to a server.
Is a small action model less capable?
It depends on the task. A small action model is trained for one kind of work, completing steps in apps, so it does not carry the broad knowledge that makes general-purpose models large. Tasks that need more capacity can run in a hybrid setup.
How is a small action model related to an on-device action model?
The two terms overlap. "Small" describes the size of the model, and "on-device" describes where it runs. A small action model is what lets an action model run on the device with the chips phones have today.
